Challenge

McInstry selected EPL as the lighting upgrades provider because of our extensive experience with large-scale projects and our track record of proven results for correctional institutions and other government clients. EPL is familiar with the unique requirements of a facility where safety, security and adequate lighting are paramount. Our employees are used to undergoing intense background checks and extensive daily check-in and check-out procedures that are lengthy and thorough.

Our task was to replace a wide range of outdated, inefficient fixtures with a more streamlined, more energy-efficient solution, and that’s exactly what we did.

Solution

We streamlined interior lighting by upgrading the facility to low-watt T8 lamps, replacing a range of fixtures, including various T8 fixtures with 2, 3, or 4 lamps, as well as incandescent and CFL lamps. EPL selected specialized fixtures with special nuts and bolts to prevent inmate tampering.

EPL helped the client streamline inventory, maintenance and replacement costs by achieving the right light levels while reducing the number of lamps per fixture and changing incandescents and CFLs to consistent LED lamps.

For the facility’s exterior, we replaced High-Pressure Sodium, Metal Halide, and Incandescent pole, flood and wallpack fixtures with new LED fixtures, using existing canopy fixtures with new LED lamps where possible to save cost.

We overcame a significant mid-project challenge for the client. While working on replacing an exterior pole fixture, a neutral failed due to the old system’s bad wiring. This blew nine pole fixtures, a major catastrophe for a correctional institution. EPL’s on-site team rewired all nine fixtures and had them working again by night fall that same day.
